The Difference Between Capsules and Liquid (Herbal Supplements)
Jun 19th 2018
The thing to remember about both capsule-based and liquid or extract-based herbal supplements is that both are potent and both are effective. However, liquids enter the bloodstream faster than capsules (and/or tablets and soft- gels).
Liquids enter the bloodstream immediately, due to the sublingual process, and because of such, the therapeutic effects are almost immediate, whether the effects are subtle or obvious.
On the other hand, with capsules, these do not work like liquids. Capsules at a minimum take forty-five minutes to fully dissolve in the digestive tract and that’s presupposing the capsules are derived from plant matter, like vegetable cellulose (derived from plant products) or hydroxyl-propyl-methyl-cellulose (HPMC) which are the type of capsules we use at DjehutyMaatraHerbs.com.
Cellulose is an insoluble fiber found in fruits and vegetables and thus is an attractive option for people who avoid animal byproducts, people who classify themselves as vegan or vegetarian or who simply just subsist on a plant-based diet without wearing a specific title.
Capsules derived from animal byproduct, such as gelatin, do not dissolve fully like cellulose-based capsules. At best, gelatin-based capsules only dissolve 25-30% which means you don’t get one-hundred percent of the contents of the capsule unlike you do with cellulose-based capsules which could include a host of excipients like fillers, binders, bulking agents, and preservatives – something you never have to worry about getting from products purchased here at DjehutyMaatraHerbs.com as we do not use them in our capsule-based products, just one hundred percent herbal powder or powders accounting for the potency you get from our capsuled products.
It is very important that I point out here that just because a product uses cellulose-based capsules doesn’t mean you’re getting good ingredients as most commercial herbal supplements on the market that use cellulose-based capsules also use excipients, including as active or inactive ingredients.
Some common excipients include starch, silica, rice powder, vegetable stearate, carrageenan, microcrystalline cellulose, stearic acid, sodium starch glycolate, and soy polysaccharides to name a few. You’ll never find any of the foregoing substances in our products. Ever.
Liquid extracts are more ideal for infants, toddlers, small children, elderly people, and incapacitated individuals who may have difficulty with digestion.
The thing to look out about or look out for in commercial herbal extracts or liquid supplements is the use of alcohol (as a solvent) in the menstruum or base. Alcohol is a potent solvent and accelerates the production of herbal extracts which is why so many manufacturers use it.
It is important that herbal extracts that contain alcohol have alcohol from a plant source, like grain or coconut. Some herbal extracts contain Vodka as the alcohol source for use as a solvent in the base. This is highly toxic as you cannot consume an herbal extract that contains alcohol without consuming the alcohol. However, the one exception is pouring the herbal extract into a cup of hot water allowing the alcohol content to evaporate before consuming it.
You don’t have to worry about this problem with herbal extracts made and sold by DjehutyMaatraherbs.com. Our menstruum or base is water (distilled, alkaline) and vegetable glycerin. We use solar and lunar energy (direct exposure) as the solvent and we use human hands to agitate the extract(s). It’s get no more natural than this process, which is a tedious and time-consuming process (approximately two weeks to make) but nevertheless produces a very superior and high-quality end product.
Another thing to know and remember about capsules and liquids is that while liquids work faster, capsules’ contents will stay in the body longer than liquids or extracts.
